Hereford Residential College Launches 5k Run to Benefit Area Families
(Charlottesville, VA) – Students at Hereford Residential College at the University of Virginia are planning a 5K run to benefit Children, Youth & Family Services of Charlottesville. The inaugural HerefordCollege ‘Round the Grounds 5K Run/Walk will be held Saturday, April 12 at 8:15 a.m. Runners and walkers can register at http://www.cyfs.org/5k%20Race.html. Participants can also sign up the day of the event at 7:00 a.m. at Hereford College, located on Observatory Hill behind Runk Dining Hall on Stadium Road. Race day activities will include food, fun, shirts, giveaways, and prizes.
The Hereford College ‘Round the Grounds 5K provides a scenic course with runners passing through many historic sites, including the University of Virginia grounds. For those with a competitive edge, the run/walk is engineered to be a ‘fast’ 5K course with water stops along the route. For a map, check out http://www.cyfs.org/5k%20Race.html.
Most of the Hereford College community, including some 300 students, 20 faculty and staff Fellows, and the college administration team are pitching in to make this inaugural run a success. Students have mapped out the course, designed t-shirts and found sponsors. The Charlottesville Running Company is co-sponsoring the students’ efforts. “Our chief goal is to unite the Hereford community with the Charlottesville community by giving something back. We plan to do this by donating race proceeds to Children, Youth & Family Services,” explained first-year Hereford resident and race organizer Wyatt Shields.
Children, Youth and Family Services (CYFS) served more than 3,000 kids in the Charlottesville area in 2007. For the last 86 years, CYFS has provided families with a range of services such as counseling for child abuse victims, violence prevention programs and parenting classes. Proceeds from the Hereford College ‘Round the Grounds 5K will help support all of these programs.
“We are so pleased that the students at Hereford Residential College have chosen CYFS to be the beneficiary of this wonderful new initiative,” said Jacki Bryant, Executive Director of CYFS. “We are so impressed by the commitment of these University students to help us meet critical needs for the children of our community.”
