What is Child Care Quality?
The CYFS Child Care Quality Program helps families find quality child care and
helps providers to improve the quality of the child care they offer. Serving
the city of Charlottesville and the counties of Albemarle, Greene, Fluvanna,
Louisa and Nelson, Child Care Quality offers resource and referral to families,
voluntary registration for small home-based child care providers, the Seal of
Good Child Care for providers seeking to improve their quality of care, and
trainings for new and established child care providers.

Voluntary Registration of Home-Based Child Care Providers
The CYFS Child Care Quality Program is the local contracting agency for the
State of Virginia Voluntary Registration Program for home-based child care providers.
Providers who care for five or fewer children (not including their own) in their
homes can contact Sharon Churchman at 296-4118, ext. 241 or e-mail Sharon
to ask about qualifying for Voluntary Registration. (Voluntarily registered
child care homes are eligible for referrals from CYFS’s Resource and Referral
Service.)
Seal of Quality Child Care
CYFS works with providers enrolled in the Seal of Quality Child Care program of
the Partnership for Children. The seal is awarded to participating area regulated
providers who demonstrate quality service – including safety, programming,
nutrition and environment – to the children in their care. There are four
levels of recognition available in the Seal program. Providers are offered resources,
training and mentoring to assess and improve their care to earn higher Seal
levels. The Seal may be posted at the child care site to let parents know that
they are receiving quality care for their children. The program is free and
voluntary. For more information, call Kathy Flanders at 296-4118, ext. 243,
or e-mail Kathy.
