Programs for Parents

CYFS offers a wide range of programs for parents, including high-quality/low-cost parent education through our well-received parenting classes and workshops.


Child Care Quality
The CYFS Child Care Quality Program helps families find quality child care and helps providers to improve the quality of the child care they offer. Child Care Quality offers resource and referral to families, voluntary registration for small home-based child care providers, the Seal of Quality Child Care for providers, Virginia Star Quality Initiative for Center-Based Providers, and trainings for home-based and established child care providers. TransParenting
A one-time, four-hour class that provides information about helping children adjust to the changes associated with family transitions and provide tools to parents to work together for the child’s well-being when separation and/or divorce are chosen. This class meets the Court requirements for a parenting class. MORE

Six Easy Steps
Six Easy Steps (SES) is a six-week parenting class for parents of children 2-12 years old. SES uses the national curriculum Systematic Training for Effective Parenting (STEP) to teach effective parenting skills in an interactive approach to parent education. Limited free child care is provided. MORE

Surviving the Teen Years
Surviving the Teen Years is a fun and interactive six-week class for parents and their kids (9-18 years old). STY is for families who are struggling with communication, roles and responsibilities and other family and parenting challenges. Past participants, both parents and teens, indicate that they found these classes very helpful. MORE

REAL Dads Program
The REAL Dads program provides encouragement and support to dads and provides fathers with resources and information to support their parenting goals. Children need fathers and fathers need their children. The REAL Dads program helps to strengthen this relationship. MORE

Home Visiting
The CYFS Home Visiting programs offer new mothers and parents of young children support to nurture their children in a positive, enriching and rewarding way. MORE

Parenting Mobile
The Parenting Mobile travels to 4 local neighborhoods, Friendship Court, Parks Edge, Southwood, and Blue Ridge Commons, on a weekly basis to provide parents easy access to parenting support, resources and an early learning playgroup. Parents from any neighborhood are welcome to use this resource. MORE

SAFE Safe Activities for Everyone
SAFE's mission is to provide a safe, child friendly, nurturing environment for children to visit with non-custodial parents for the purpose of developing healthy parent-child relationships. MORE

Saturday Workshops
Free workshops are offered for parents of children 0-6 years of age held at CYFS at 1000 East High St, Charlottesville with free limited child care provided. Pre-registration required. Topics include: potty training, sleep issues, kindergarten readiness, nutrition and discipline. MORE

Roots to Wings: Parenting our PreSchoolers for Success
is a FREE eight-week course for parents, grandparent, and caregivers of African-American children ages 0 – 6 years. This program is offered several times a year. This unique course acknowledges cultural differences and is specifically designed to address the distinctive challenges of raising African-American children today. As we cover positive parenting techniques and healthy child development, we will also tackle topics like: “Black Isn’t Negative” and “Respect Your Roots.”  The course uses the evidence-based curriculum called, “Effective Black Parenting”.  Pre-registration is required for classes and for the limited FREE child-care.
