Teen Counseling Program
Counseling
The Teen Counseling Program provides free crisis and ongoing counseling to teens as young as 12 who have run away or are at risk of running away or being homeless. This includes teens engaged in high-risk behaviors, such as doing drugs, breaking the law, or hurting themselves, as well as families with teens who are experiencing increased conflict at home. Counseling can be provided over the phone, in home, in school, or outpatient and can be targeted to work with the teen individually or to work with the family as a whole. Teens and their families can receive ongoing counseling as needed until they are 18. MORE
24-Hour Teen Crisis Hotline
434-972-SAFE (434-972-7233)
The telephone hotline is staffed 24-hours a day for teens and their families in crisis. Responses to calls can include offering a friendly ear, providing over-the-phone crisis counseling, arranging for in-person counseling with TCP staff, linkage to emergency shelter, or referrals to community programs to meet specific needs.
Emergency Shelter
Emergency shelter is provided by a local group home in Charlottesville to teens, 12-17 years old, who need to be out of the home to prevent more serious consequences of family conflict. Shelter is limited to 21 days in length and requires written permission from both the teen and their parent. During the shelter stay families use TCP counseling services to attempt to resolve the conflict and bring the teen back home, when possible.
