Information about Child Abuse
WHAT IS CHILD ABUSE & NEGLECT
Child abuse and neglect has many forms including:
- Real or threatened non-accidental physical or emotional injury to a child
- Illegal sexual acts upon a child including incest, rape, fondling, inappropriate touching, indecent exposure, or prostitution
- Allowing a child to be used in any sexually explicit visual material
- Neglect when there is inadequate food, clothing, shelter, emotional nurturance, or health care
- Abandonment of a child
- Failure to provide adequate supervision appropriate to the age and developmental level of a child
SIGNS OF CHILD ABUSE AND NEGLECT
- Presenting with unexplained bruises or injuries
- Displaying discomfort with physical contact or discomfort regarding contact with specific persons
- Acting overly withdrawn or aggressive
- Conveying suicidal thoughts or gestures
- Experiencing problems at school
- Demonstrating high risk behaviors such as drug use, running away and unsafe sexual practices or other highly sexualized behaviors
